Atlas Roofing: The Houston Owner’s Guide

If your Atlas roof is failing, we stock and install Atlas-compatible roofing materials across Houston, with most full replacements running $8,000 to $20,000 depending on square footage, slope, and tear-off conditions. Repairs on Atlas shingle systems typically land between $400 and $1,800. Most homeowners discover the problem after a storm blows shingles into the yard, a ceiling stain appears after a hard rain, or granules start piling up in the gutters. That’s usually when the call comes in.

Call (940) 289-7658

Atlas Roofing has been manufacturing asphalt shingles since 1982, and their product line splits into three families you’ll actually find on Houston homes: the Pinnacle line (their premium architectural shingle), StormMaster (the higher-wind-rated series), and GlassMaster (the economy three-tab). We work on all three. Bradford Remodeling Co Houston is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Atlas, which means we call problems straight without worrying about what a manufacturer rep wants us to say.

Which Atlas Models This Applies To

Atlas Pinnacle shingles are the ones we see most often in Houston neighborhoods, from Meyerland bungalows to newer builds out in Katy. They’re identifiable by the dimensional profile: two laminated layers, a shadow line along the bottom, and a matte finish that doesn’t look flat the way three-tabs do. Atlas StormMaster shingles carry a Class 4 impact rating and show up frequently on homes in Clear Lake and Friendswood where hail is a recurring concern. The label you need is on the shingle bundle wrapper, but if the roof is already down, a qualified eye can usually identify the line by profile and granule pattern.

The compatibility gotcha with Atlas is the accessory system. Atlas makes their own ridge caps, hip and ridge shingles, and starter strips sized specifically to their Pinnacle and StormMaster lines. Mixing a generic ridge cap with an Atlas dimensional shingle creates a visible seam and weakens the ridge line over time. We spec Atlas starter strips and caps on Atlas re-roofs, not because the manufacturer says so, but because we’ve seen generic accessories fail at the ridge before the field shingles do. If you’re piecing repairs after storm damage, matching the shingle to what’s already on the roof matters more than saving $15 a bundle. Houston’s humidity also means we inspect the decking under any Atlas roof that’s been down more than 12 years; trapped moisture under old felt is a common failure point we find in Bellaire and West University homes.

Signs Your Atlas Roofing Is Failing

  • Granules in the gutters or at downspout outlets. Atlas shingles shed granules as the asphalt oxidizes. A light dusting after year one is normal; piles of granules after year ten mean the shingle surface is losing its UV protection, and Houston sun accelerates that process on south-facing slopes.
  • Curling or cupping shingle edges. When the mat absorbs moisture and then dries repeatedly in Houston’s heat-humidity cycle, the shingle’s edges lift. This is a ventilation issue as often as it is a shingle issue, and it’s a sign the roof is reaching the back half of its service life.
  • Water stains on ceilings or along exterior walls after a rain. A stain means water already made it through the shingle layer and into the decking. By the time you see the stain, the leak has usually been active for weeks. The repair is rarely just one shingle.
  • Missing shingles after a storm. Atlas StormMaster on a properly nailed roof should hang on through most Houston thunderstorms, but no shingle survives a falling limb. Any missing shingle exposes the decking and underlayment, and one missing shingle lets wind get under its neighbors.
  • Soft spots when walking the roof or visible sagging at the ridge. This is a decking failure below the shingles. The shingles may look fine while the substrate underneath has rotted from trapped moisture. In Houston, this is the most expensive failure you can ignore, because it compounds fast.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled primary suite with built-in wardrobes and a window seat

Full Atlas roof replacement in Houston runs between $8,000 and $20,000, with most 1,800 to 2,500 square foot homes landing between $11,000 and $16,000. The spread comes from three things: the number of stories (two-story tear-offs cost more), the condition of the decking underneath (rot replacement runs $2 to $4 per square foot on top of the base price), and which Atlas line you choose. StormMaster adds roughly 10 to 15 percent over Pinnacle because of the impact rating. Roof repairs, the smaller job, run $400 to $1,800 in Houston depending on what’s actually failing.

You get a written price before any work starts. That’s not a courtesy; that’s how we run. The written price covers tear-off of the old system, decking inspection, underlayment, Atlas starter strips, field shingles, ridge caps, vents, and site cleanup. If the decking is bad, we price that change in writing before touching it, not after. And every Atlas roof we install carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work fails inside the first year, we come back and correct it at no charge, in writing, before the crew ever sets up ladders.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check a few things: dark granule streaks in downspouts, shingle edges curling from the gutter line, missing shingles visible from the ground, or daylight showing through attic decking. If you see water stains, soft decking, or you don’t know what you’re looking at, stop. Roof work in Houston is not a weekend project. Falls from roof height account for too many local injuries every year, and a patch job on a failing deck throws good money at a bad substrate.

Repairing a couple of shingles on a one-story roof with a walkable pitch is something a careful owner can do if the decking is sound, the shingles match, and the nails hit the nail line correctly. Everything beyond that – ridge replacement, decking repair, flashing work around chimneys and vents – belongs with a crew that does it daily. We’ll tell you over the phone if your job sounds like a two-square patch or a full re-roof. Call (940) 289-7658 and we’ll scope it straight.

FAQs

How long should Atlas shingles last in Houston?
Atlas GlassMaster three-tabs typically hold up 12 to 15 years in Houston’s climate, while Pinnacle and StormMaster architectural shingles run 20 to 30 years depending on ventilation, slope exposure, and whether the decking stayed dry. South-facing slopes age faster here because of direct sun. Call (940) 289-7658 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your roof has five years left or needs attention now.

Can a failing Atlas roof be repaired instead of replaced?
Yes, if the failure is localized and the surrounding shingles are still bonded to the decking. Isolated shingle loss, small hail strikes, or flashing leaks around a single vent are repairable in the $400 to $1,800 range. If granule loss is widespread, the decking has softened, or the shingles won’t reseal after a wind event, patching becomes a monthly expense. Call (940) 289-7658 and we’ll give you a straight read on whether to repair or replace.

How long does an Atlas roof replacement take?
Most Houston homes are torn off and re-roofed in two to three days, with a day of cleanup after that. Bigger jobs – steep pitches, two stories, decking replacement – add a day or two. The site is left clean, the scope is documented, and you get the signed written guarantee in your hand before we leave. That’s what squared away looks like.

Do you stock Atlas roofing materials in Houston?
We stock Atlas Pinnacle and StormMaster shingles, Atlas starter strips, and Atlas ridge caps in the most common Houston colorways, with specialized colors ordered direct through Atlas distribution. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for interior projects, but roofing means Atlas and we keep the truck loaded. Call (940) 289-7658 to schedule a free estimate and we’ll bring the samples to you.
