Ameristar Driveway & Pavers: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If your Ameristar driveway or paver surface is cracked, sinking, or separating at the edges, we can match the replacement material and install it for a Houston installed price of $7,000 – $18,000 depending on square footage, base condition, and Ameristar product line. We stock common Ameristar-compatible pavers and edge restraints on our trucks, and we schedule most replacements within a week of your free estimate. You’ll most likely notice the failure at the driveway apron or along the expansion joints first, where Houston’s clay soil has shifted the base and the pavers have started to telegraph every crack beneath them.
We’re an independent Houston contractor, not an Ameristar dealer or affiliate. What that means for you is we’re free to tell you straight what’s worth fixing and what’s past it, without a sales quota attached to an Ameristar SKU. Curtis Lane has been reading paver failures in this market for over a decade, and he’ll tell you the same thing he tells every homeowner: the paver itself almost never fails. It’s the base that failed, and the paver just tells you about it.
Which Ameristar Models This Applies To

Ameristar’s paver and driveway products fall into two broad families: their interlocking concrete pavers and their segmental retaining-wall blocks used at driveway edges and raised patios. The interlocking lines are sized in metric increments, and that’s the first compatibility gotcha: Ameristar pavers are typically 60mm or 80mm thick, not the 2-3/8 inch (60mm) or 3-1/8 inch (80mm) you’ll see quoted in imperial on some Houston supplier sheets. A 60mm Ameristar paver does not interlock cleanly with a 2-3/8 inch competitor paver, even though the numbers look close. The paver-to-paver joint will be visibly off.
To identify what you have, flip over a loose paver. Ameristar stamps the product code on the underside or on the side face, usually a two-letter series prefix followed by the size. If the paver is glued down or mortared and you can’t flip it, measure the exposed face and thickness with a tape, and snap a photo of the surface texture and color blend. Color blend matters more than people expect. Ameristar runs batch-specific color lots, and a replacement paver from a different lot can look like a different product entirely in Houston’s hard afternoon light. We typically recommend an aftermarket match only when the Ameristar lot is discontinued, and we’ll show you the two candidates side by side on-site before we cut a check to the supplier.

Signs Your Ameristar Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Low spots that hold water after a Houston rain. This means the sand base or road-base layer has washed out beneath the pavers. Left alone, those low spots become freeze-thaw cracks even in Houston’s mild winters, because standing water is what does the damage, not hard freezes alone.
- Pavers rocking or clicking underfoot. A paver that moves when you step on it has lost bed support. The cause is usually a failed edge restraint or a base that was never compacted in lifts to begin with.
- Cracks running in a straight line across multiple pavers. A single crack line that crosses several pavers in a row almost always follows a control joint or a buried utility trench that was backfilled without proper compaction. That’s a base problem, and repointing or replacing the cracked pavers without fixing the base will fail again within two Houston seasons.
- Gaps opening between the driveway and the garage slab, or along the street curb. Houston’s gumbo clay expands when wet and shrinks in drought. If the original install didn’t use a proper edge restraint pinned through the sand into compacted base, the entire field can drift, and you’ll see the gap grow at the weak end first.
- Sand washing out of the joints after every rain. Joint sand is a wear item, but if you’re seeing sand on the sidewalk after each storm, the polymeric sand failed or was never used. Without locked joints, individual pavers start working loose within a year.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Ameristar driveway or paver surface replacement in Houston runs $7,000 – $18,000 installed. Here’s what drives the spread:
- Square footage. A two-car driveway of roughly 400 – 500 square feet lands at the lower end. Larger drives with walkways, aprons, and a side yard path push toward the top.
- Base condition. If the existing road base is intact and we can re-compact and re-set on it, that keeps cost down. If we’re excavating failed clay and hauling in new road base, which we do on a majority of Houston tear-outs, that adds $2 – $4 per square foot in material and labor.
- Ameristar product line. Their 60mm pavers cost less than the 80mm heavy-traffic line. We’ll show you the per-square-foot difference in writing, so you choose with the number on the table.
- Edge restraint and drainage. Proper edge restraints and any needed regrading fall under our written scope. No reprice at the door, no change order for what the job always needed.
Every Ameristar driveway and paver replacement we install in Houston is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the surface settles, separates, or fails inside one year, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s in writing on every contract, and the guarantee is signed and handed to you when the job closes, along with a clean site and a documented scope.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: confirm whether pavers are loose along the edges, mark low spots with a level after rain, and pull up one loose paver to check the base beneath it. That inspection will tell us more in five minutes than photos ever could. What you shouldn’t do is hand-compact a failed base, re-set pavers over a washed-out sand bed, or pour new concrete edge restraint against live pavers without the right joint spacing. We’ve torn out enough weekend repairs in Montrose and Cypress to tell you: the second repair always costs more than the first install done right.
If the failure is spreading or you’re seeing base material wash into the joints, call (940) 289-7658 for a free estimate. We’ll put a straight number in writing before any work starts.
FAQs

A properly installed Ameristar driveway in Houston should last 20 – 25 years on a correctly prepared base. The pavers themselves are rated for that lifespan, but the base and edge restraints are the parts that fail first, usually inside 10 – 12 years if they were never compacted properly or if drainage was ignored. Call (940) 289-7658 for an assessment that separates base failure from paver failure.
Yes, when the failure is localized: a single low spot, a cracked edge course, or a few rocking pavers. Sectional repair in Houston runs anywhere from a few hundred dollars into the low thousands depending on how much base has to be excavated and re-compacted. If the base has failed across the whole field, patching just postpones the full replacement and usually costs more net than doing it once. We’ll tell you which situation you have before we quote a dime.
Most residential Ameristar driveway replacements in Houston run 3 – 5 working days from tear-out to final joint sand, weather permitting. A paver patio or walkway can run 1 – 2 days. We give you a written schedule with the written price, and we clean the site every day the crew is out there.
We stock common Ameristar-compatible pavers, edge restraints, and polymeric joint sand on our trucks, and for discontinued or custom color lots, we source direct from Houston suppliers with the product code you’ve given us from the paver stamp. You never have to chase a supplier or guess at compatibility. Call (940) 289-7658 and we’ll identify what you have before the first visit.
