American Standard Home Additions & ADU: The Houston Owner’s Guide
An American Standard home addition or ADU in Houston typically runs $45,000 to $130,000 installed, with full ADU construction starting at $90,000 and garage conversions landing between $30,000 and $80,000. We stock and install American Standard-compatible fixtures, plumbing rough-in components, and finish materials for these projects, and we can usually have a crew on site within days of the written estimate. Most Houston homeowners discover a failing component when they see water staining on a ceiling, a door that no longer closes square after the clay soil shifts, or a mini-split that runs constantly without cooling the new space.
We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with American Standard. That means we match the right American Standard part to your rough-in without the inflated markup you’d get from a brand showroom.
Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard doesn’t sell a single “addition package.” What you’ve got is a mix of their fixtures tied into a structural and mechanical system we build. The parts we replace most often in Houston additions and ADUs come from the American Standard Cadet, Champion, and Town Square lines: toilets, lavatory faucets, shower valves, and tub fillers. The compatibility gotcha most owners miss is that American Standard shower valves have changed cartridge specs across production years. A valve body installed in 2018 may not accept the current OEM cartridge without an adapter. We pull the trim plate and read the model number stamped on the brass before ordering anything. That’s the only way to get it right the first time.
For the structural side of the addition itself, OEM doesn’t apply the same way. A door frame for an ADU addition is spec’d to the opening, not to a brand. We use Therma-Tru doors and James Hardie siding on American Standard additions because those products hold up to Houston’s humidity cycle, which runs from swamp to drought and back six times a year. An off-the-shelf interior door hung in an unconditioned ADU will warp by August. We’ve seen it happen in Montrose carriage houses and out in Cypress.

Signs Your American Standard Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Water pressure drops when a second fixture runs. This usually means the supply line from the main house is undersized for the added fixture load. A 1/2-inch line can’t feed a shower and toilet in an ADU at the same time. The fix is a dedicated 3/4-inch run back to the meter.
- The mini-split runs all day and the room still sits at 80. In a Houston summer, this is almost always an undersized unit or a charge leak at the flare fitting. Adding square footage without recalculating the cooling load leaves you chasing comfort with a system that never had the capacity.
- Doors and windows bind in the frame. Houston’s gumbo clay expands when wet and shrinks when dry. If the slab wasn’t engineered for the soil’s movement, the entire addition shifts a quarter inch seasonally. You’ll see it at the ADA threshold and the French door to the patio.
- Water stains on the ceiling where the addition ties into the original roofline. The valley flashing at that transition is the first place a roof fails. A 10-year-old addition in Houston often needs that seam reflashed long before the shingles are done.
- Sewer smell near the new bathroom when you run the washer. That’s an improperly vented waste line or a dried-out trap on a floor drain. Either way, the fix is in the rough-in work, not in a bottle of drain cleaner.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what replacement work on an American Standard addition or ADU costs in the Houston market right now:
- Full home addition (200 – 600 sq ft): $45,000 – $130,000
- New detached ADU construction: $90,000 – $220,000
- Garage conversion to living space: $30,000 – $80,000
- Fixture replacement within an existing addition (toilet, valve, faucet set): $800 – $3,000 per unit
- Mini-split replacement with properly sized unit: $4,500 – $9,000 installed
What drives the range on the big numbers is the condition of the existing rough-in. If the slab is sound and the waste lines are sized correctly, we’re talking finish work. If we’re cutting into a slab to correct drainage or reframing a roofline tie-in, the number climbs. Every quote from us is a written line-item price before work starts. No number moves at the door. And every completed replacement carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it fails within a year, we come back and correct it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can replace an American Standard faucet cartridge or a toilet fill valve yourself if you’re comfortable shutting off water at the angle stop and you’ve got the right model number in hand. The risk on a fixture swap is a small leak and a wet vanity. The risk on structural work is different. Cutting into a load-bearing wall, re-routing drain lines, or pulling a permit on an ADU electrical run without a licensed contractor puts you on the wrong side of Houston’s code enforcement. That’s not a $200 fix, that’s a failed inspection and a do-over. If the problem is in the rough-in, the slab, the roofline, or the panel, call us at (940) 289-7658. We’ll tell you straight what it needs and what it costs.

FAQs

A properly built addition in Houston lasts 50 years or more on the structural side. The finish components age faster: mini-splits go 10 – 15 years, roofing at the tie-in seam often needs reflashing by year 12, and Houston’s hard water shortens faucet and valve life to 8 – 12 years. Call (940) 289-7658 for a straight assessment of your specific addition.
Fixture parts like cartridges and fill valves can usually be repaired with American Standard OEM parts. Structural failures at the roofline tie-in, slab movement, and undersized supply lines can’t be patched meaningfully; they get corrected once and stay corrected. Call (940) 289-7658 and we’ll tell you which one you’ve got.
A single-fixture replacement takes a few hours on site. A roofline tie-in repair runs two to three days. A full ADU replacement from slab up through finish can run four to six months depending on scope and city inspection scheduling in Houston. Your written estimate includes a schedule with dates, not vagaries.
We stock the most common American Standard cartridges, fill valves, and flush assemblies on the truck so we can complete most fixture repairs in a single visit. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone products when the job calls for cabinetry and surfaces. Call (940) 289-7658 for a free estimate.
