Ameristar Kitchen Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide

A full Ameristar kitchen remodel in Houston typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed, depending on cabinet count, countertop material, and whether you’re moving plumbing or electrical. Most of the kitchens we tear into in this market were built in the 1990s and 2000s, and the failure pattern is usually the same: delaminating cabinet boxes from Houston humidity, worn drawer glides, and countertops that have taken a decade of hard use. If your Ameristar kitchen is starting to show its age, the question isn’t whether to fix it, it’s whether you’re replacing pieces or committing to a full rework.

We stock and install Ameristar-compatible cabinetry, hardware, and countertop systems for kitchens across Houston, from Meyerland to Kingwood to Katy. Bradford Remodeling Co Houston is an independent contractor, not affiliated with Ameristar, which means we give you straight answers about what’s worth salvaging and what needs to go.

Which Ameristar Models This Applies To

Ameristar cabinetry lines have shifted over the years, and the compatibility gotcha most Houston homeowners hit is this: an Ameristar cabinet from 2005 is not a drop-in match for the Ameristar cabinet sold today. Door profiles, hinge boring patterns, and box depths changed at least twice in the last two decades. If you’re trying to replace one failed cabinet door or drawer front, matching the exact stile and rail width to the existing doors matters more than matching the brand name.

Here’s how to identify what you have. Open a door and look at the top hinge. Older Ameristar units used a concealed cup hinge with a 35mm bore; newer lines moved to a soft-close version of the same hinge, but the mounting plate spacing can differ by 3 to 4 millimeters. That’s enough to make a new door hang crooked on an old frame. The drawer boxes tell you more: dovetail joints on the front corners means a mid-tier or better line; staple-and-glue construction means entry-level, and those boxes are almost always the first thing to fail in Houston’s humidity.

For countertops, Ameristar kitchens came through with laminate, solid surface, and occasionally granite. If you’re matching a section of countertop rather than replacing the whole run, laminate is the easiest to patch-match by color code, solid surface can be seamed by a fabricator, and granite means you’ll never get a perfect match, so you plan a full replacement or live with a transition seam.

We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone when an Ameristar-specific part isn’t the right call or the product line is discontinued.

Signs Your Ameristar Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Drawer glides that bind or fall off the track. Houston’s heat and humidity swell wood drawer boxes slightly, and the cheap side-mount glides on older Ameristar entry-level boxes lose their ball bearings over time. Once the glide binds, the drawer starts wearing the box itself.
  • Cabinet doors that won’t stay closed or sit crooked. This is almost always hinge fatigue or hinge bore wallowing, not a door problem. The wood around the cup hinge cracks, the screw loses purchase, and the door sags. It looks worse than it is, and it’s usually repairable without replacing the whole cabinet.
  • Delaminating shelf surfaces or peeling edge banding. Houston humidity gets into particleboard and eventually breaks down the glue. Edge banding lifts first at the corners, then the laminate face starts peeling. This is progressive and doesn’t stop once it starts.
  • Soft-close mechanisms that slam shut. The damper inside the hinge or drawer slide has failed. It’s a small part, but once one goes, the rest are typically right behind it, because they all came from the same batch and have seen the same years of use.
  • Faded or cloudy countertops near the sink and stove lines. Solid surface and some laminates lose their gloss from repeated cleaning and heat exposure. Clouding near the sink means the topcoat is gone and the surface is absorbing moisture, which leads to staining and eventually cracking.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A galley kitchen opened up to the dining room with a new peninsula

For Ameristar-specific kitchen work in Houston, here are the installed price ranges we quote on a regular basis:

  • Cabinet door and drawer front replacement: $4,000 to $13,000 depending on cabinet count, door style, and finish match
  • Countertop replacement (laminate to quartz or solid surface): $2,000 to $6,500 for a standard Houston kitchen footprint
  • Full kitchen remodel including cabinets, countertops, and fixtures: $14,000 to $45,000
  • Hardware refresh (hinges, drawer glides, soft-close upgrades): $800 to $2,500

What drives the range is cabinet count and the amount of substrate repair required once we open the walls or remove the old boxes. Houston slab foundations shift, and kitchens that have settled often need shimming or planing before new cabinets go in straight. Every quote from Bradford Remodeling Co Houston includes a written line-item price before work starts. You’ll know exactly what the parts cost, what the labor costs, and what the guarantee covers. No numbers that move at the door.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely tighten a loose hinge screw, clean a greasy drawer glide, or check whether a soft-close damper is simply jammed with debris. Those are homeowner-level tasks. What you should not do is attempt to re-hang a damaged cabinet box, replace a hinge bore that’s wallowed out, or seam a solid surface countertop. Those jobs require knowing what’s structurally sound underneath, and getting it wrong means a door that falls off the frame or a seam that cracks within a season. We’ve also walked into Houston kitchens where a homeowner tried to shim a settled cabinet run with scrap wood, and the result was a countertop that sloped half an inch across six feet.

If you’re not sure whether the part you’re looking at is a repair or a replacement, call us at (940) 289-7658. We’ll tell you straight what you’re dealing with, and the estimate is free either way. Straight scope, straight number, that’s the whole conversation.
