GAF Driveway & Pavers: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Bradford Remodeling Co Houston installs GAF-compatible driveway and paver systems in Houston, with paver driveway installation typically running $7,000 to $18,000 depending on square footage, substrate condition, and paver series. Most homeowners don’t discover a failed paver or driveway substrate until a Houston rain event exposes it: water pooling where it used to drain, a paver sinking at the edge of the garage apron, or sand washing out from between joints after a hard storm. If you’re standing in your driveway watching water run the wrong way, you’ve probably got a substrate failure underneath, not a surface problem.
We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with GAF. What we are is a Houston crew that works the GAF system correctly, with the substrate prep and edge restraint the manufacturer specs, because we’ve seen what happens when someone skips that step to save a day.
Which GAF Models This Applies To

GAF’s hardscape line runs through their Timberline and Glenwood paver series, with the main compatibility gotcha being the paver thickness. Houston driveways need a minimum 60mm paver for vehicular traffic, and some GAF paver lines sold for patios and walkways are 40mm units that won’t survive a truck rolling over them every day. Check the underside of a pulled paver for the molded thickness stamp before you order replacements. A 40mm paver in a driveway will crack at the edges within two seasons of Houston’s clay soil movement, and that’s not a warranty claim, it’s a spec mismatch.
The OEM-vs-aftermarket decision matters here. GAF pavers have specific color-batch codes, and a mismatched aftermarket paver will show up as a visible patch even if the dimensions are correct. For a full driveway, we install OEM GAF product with the batch code verified against the original order. For a spot repair where a single paver cracked at the corner, we’ll match the color, size, and thickness as close as the market allows, and we’ll tell you before we install it if the match isn’t perfect.

Signs Your GAF Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Sand washing out between pavers after rain. The joint sand is the load transfer system. When it washes out, the pavers start shifting under wheel load, and the edges chip against each other. In Houston’s downpours, a failing edge restraint shows up as sand in the gutter within six months.
- A paver sinking at the garage apron or driveway edge. That’s a base failure, not a paver failure. Houston’s clay soil expands and contracts with moisture, and without a proper compacted aggregate base, the pavers move with it. You’ll see a dip form within a year of installation.
- Water pooling in the middle of the driveway. A correctly installed paver driveway has a 1% to 2% slope. Pooling means the base settled unevenly. Standing water on pavers accelerates joint sand loss and lets mosquito breeding start right at your front door.
- Cracks running through multiple pavers in a line. A single cracked paver is a bad unit. A crack line running across four or five pavers is a failing base or a tree root pushing up from underneath. That’s a dig-out repair, not a paver swap.
- Edge pavers tipping outward or separating from the restraint. The edge restraint is the part nobody sees until it fails. When it does, the outside course of pavers starts spreading, and the whole field loses tension. You’ll feel the driveway edge move underfoot.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Paver driveway installation in Houston runs $7,000 to $18,000 for a standard two-car driveway. The range comes down to square footage, base condition, and whether we’re doing a clean install or digging out and replacing a failed substrate. A driveway replacement where the old base failed runs $5,000 to $14,000 depending on how deep we have to excavate and haul off. Driveway sealing runs $250 to $700, which covers a clean, a re-sand of the joints, and a quality sealer appropriate for GAF pavers.
Every price is written before work starts. No numbers move at the door. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the full installation: if anything fails inside a year, we come back and correct it at no charge. That includes paver settlement, joint sand failure, and edge restraint issues. Curtis Lane and the whole crew stand behind it, and you get it in writing with your scope.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: look for sand in the gutter after a rain, run a hose to see where water pools, and walk the driveway edge to feel for movement. Those are diagnostics, and they help you explain the problem when you call.
Digging out a failed base, especially in Houston’s clay soil, is not a weekend job. You’ll need excavation, aggregate compaction with a plate compactor, geo-fabric in some cases, and a properly set edge restraint. A paver driveway is only as good as what’s under it. If you’re not set up to compact a base properly, you’ll be looking at the same failure in two years. Call (940) 289-7658 and we’ll get you a straight number on what it takes to fix it right.
FAQs

A correctly installed GAF paver driveway with a proper compacted base lasts 25 years or more in Houston’s climate, while the base underneath often needs attention at the 10 to 15 year mark depending on soil movement and drainage. The pavers themselves rarely fail; it’s the substrate that gives out first.
Yes, if the failure is localized to one area, we can dig out that section, rebuild the base, and reset the pavers without touching the rest of the driveway. If the base failure runs through multiple areas or the edge restraint is compromised all the way around, a full reset is usually the smarter money.
Most paver driveway replacements in Houston take three to five working days from excavation through final compaction and joint sand, weather permitting. Rain days don’t count, and Houston rain days happen. We’ll give you a written schedule with the scope.
We order GAF pavers per job so the color batch codes match, and we keep standard base materials, edge restraint, and joint sand on our trucks year-round. For spot repairs, we’ll match existing pavers as closely as the market allows and give you a straight answer on the match before we start.
