Oldcastle Fence Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Oldcastle fence installation in Houston typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a full panel-and-post system on a standard residential lot, including materials, concrete setting, and labor. Most homeowners call us after a gate post starts leaning or a bottom rail separates from a panel, usually within two to five years of the original install. Houston’s clay soil shifts with every wet-dry cycle, and Oldcastle’s concrete-mix fence panels are heavy, so when a post footing lets go, the whole section starts working loose. We carry Oldcastle-compatible posts, panels, rails, and gate hardware on our trucks, and a straightforward post reset or panel replacement is usually done in a single visit.

Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle’s precast concrete fence systems come in a few distinct lines, and the parts are not interchangeable across all of them. The two you’ll see most in Houston are the StoneWall series, which uses tongue-and-groove panels that stack between notched posts, and the Verano series, which has a smoother face and a different rail profile. The quick way to identify what you have is to measure the panel thickness: StoneWall panels run a full 1.5 inches thick, while Verano and some of the hollow-core lines come in closer to 2 inches thick but use a completely different post channel. Check the inside face of the bottom rail or the post cap for a stamped mold number before you buy anything. The gotcha we see repeatedly in Houston: a homeowner buys a StoneWall panel to replace a Verano panel because the face pattern looks close, then finds the post slot won’t accept it. OEM Oldcastle parts cost more, but the mold dimensions are exact. Quality aftermarket panels exist for the StoneWall line specifically, and we’ll tell you honestly when one makes sense and when it’s a false economy.

Signs Your Oldcastle Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Post leans more than an inch off plumb. Houston’s gumbo clay expands and contracts through the year, and a footing poured too shallow or without enough diameter will heave out of true. Once a post starts leaning, the panels on either side start pinching at the corners.
  • Panels have shifted and now overlap unevenly. Tongue-and-groove panels should sit flush. If one edge rides up over the next, that post has moved, or the original stack wasn’t shimmed level on the first course.
  • Hairline cracks running corner to corner on a panel. Concrete panels crack when the ground under them settles unevenly and the section torques. A single cracked panel usually means one bad footing, not a full fence failure.
  • Gate catches the ground or won’t latch. The gate post is the first thing to move. When the post leans even slightly, the gate sags and the latch ears no longer line up.
  • Rail ends have pulled out of the post notches. This is the precursor to a section collapse. If a rail can slide more than a quarter inch inside the notch, the post has spread or cracked at the channel.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full Oldcastle fence installation on a standard 60- to 80-foot Houston lot, expect $3,500 to $9,000 installed. The range comes down to how many posts you’re setting, whether we’re reusing existing panels or starting clean, and what the ground looks like when we dig. Clay with no rock, standard 2-foot footings, straight section: you’re at the lower end. Sloped lot, existing concrete to saw-cut, drainage issues, or a gate with a steel frame: the number moves up. Every proposal is a written line item, parts and labor separated, so you can see exactly what the materials cost and exactly what the crew is doing for the labor line. No number changes at the door. If a footing settles or a panel cracks inside the first year, the 365-Day Done Right Promise has us back out to correct it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do the diagnosis yourself: check posts for plumb with a 4-foot level, look for rail ends pulling out of notches, and see if any panels are cracked through. What you don’t want to do is dig out and reset a concrete post on a fence that’s carrying weight. A 6-foot StoneWall panel runs well over 100 pounds, and when the post comes out, that panel wants to come down. We’ve watched homeowners try this with a car jack and a come-along. It ends with cracked panels and a section on the ground. If you’re replacing one panel and the posts are solid, a capable homeowner can handle that in an afternoon. If a post moves or the section needs re-leveling, call us at (940) 289-7658 and let a crew that’s done this a few hundred times take it from the line.
