Oldcastle Windows & Doors: The Houston Owner’s Guide

If you have an Oldcastle window or door with a failed part, we stock and install compatible hardware and glass packages for most Oldcastle residential lines, with typical installed part replacement running $90 – $650 depending on the component. Most Oldcastle failures we see in Houston are hardware-related: balancers that lose tension, rollers that flatten, and weatherstripping that Houston humidity and heat have baked brittle. The fix is usually one truck visit, one part, and a written price before we touch anything.

The way most Houston homeowners find us is by calling around after a window won’t stay up or a patio door won’t roll. They’ve been told the whole unit needs replacing. Half the time, it doesn’t. We’ll tell you which half you’re in, and put it in writing.

Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle has manufactured under several residential lines over the years, including the Series 700, 900, and Builder’s Grade aluminum windows common in Houston homes built between the late 1970s and mid 2000s. The company also produced vinyl and wood-clad lines sold through builder supply houses across Texas, so the brand shows up in subdivisions all over Harris County, Fort Bend County, and Montgomery County.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: Oldcastle’s aluminum single-hung and sliding door hardware changed supplier specs at least twice between 1990 and 2010. A balancer or roller that fits a 1998 unit may not fit a 2006 unit even if the window looks identical from three feet away. The model number is usually etched on a corner label or stamped on the aluminum inside the track. If the label’s gone, we measure the channel width, the shoe profile, and the sash weight. That’s how we match it correctly the first time.

On replacement parts, you have two paths: OEM Oldcastle components where they’re still available, or quality aftermarket equivalents that match the original spec. Aftermarket is often faster and costs less. We’ll quote both when both exist, and tell you if OEM matters for your specific unit. It usually doesn’t for balancers and rollers. It can matter for locking hardware.

Signs Your Oldcastle Windows & Doors Is Failing

  • The sash drops when you let go. That’s a failed spiral or block-and-tackle balancer. Houston’s heat cycles degrade the internal spring over time, and once tension goes, the window won’t stay raised. The fix is a pair of new balancers matched to your sash weight, not a new window.
  • The door grinds or skips when sliding. Flattened rollers. Oldcastle steel rollers on concrete-track doors wear on one side and develop flat spots, especially on west-facing patio doors that catch full afternoon sun. New rollers on a clean track will usually bring it back smooth.
  • You can see daylight around the closed sash or door frame. Compressed or torn weatherstripping. Houston’s humidity and UV exposure break down the pile and vinyl seals faster than in drier climates. This is the most common Oldcastle repair we do to fix air leaks and keep utility bills from climbing.
  • The lock catches, but won’t fully engage. Misaligned strike plates or worn lock cams. Houston clay soil shifts, and slab movement can throw a door or window frame out of square. That misalignment gets blamed on the lock. Sometimes the fix is a strike shim, sometimes it’s a frame adjustment.
  • Condensation between the panes. Failed seal in the insulated glass unit, or IGU. In Oldcastle double-panes, that’s a glass replacement, not a hardware repair. Houston’s temperature swings mean a failed seal shows up as fog during humid mornings. We replace the IGU and re-glaze the sash, which runs less than a full window replacement in most cases.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Oldcastle part replacement in Houston runs on a clear range. Balancer pairs typically land between $90 and $220 installed. Roller assemblies for patio doors run $110 to $260. Weatherstripping kits for a full door or window are $80 to $190. Locking hardware replacement sits around $95 to $240. A full IGU replacement for a failed double-pane sash starts near $250 and can reach $650 for larger or tempered units.

Every quote is a written, line-item price before work starts. No numbers that move at the door. You’ll see the part, the labor, and the warranty spelled out. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the part or the installation fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s the Garrison Standard, in writing, on every job.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things you can check yourself: clean the door track, clear debris from the sill, and note whether the window label is still legible so you can read us the model number. If you’re reasonably handy, weatherstripping replacement on a fixed frame is doable with patience. But here’s the honest line: balancers hold enough tension to remove a finger if they let go wrong, and re-glazing an IGU without the right tape and shims will fail within two seasons. Houston’s heat and humidity don’t give second chances on poorly sealed glass.

If the part is a balancer, a roller, a lock, or a glass unit, call us at (940) 289-7658. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a part we can bring on the first trip, and what the job will cost before we send a uniformed, background-checked technician to your door.
