Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling: The Houston Owner’s Guide
Bradford Remodeling Co Houston installs Therma-Tru entry and patio doors as part of full kitchen remodels, with complete kitchen projects running $14,000 – $45,000 depending on scope, layout changes, and material selections. Most kitchens involving a Therma-Tru door hit the $18,000 – $32,000 range when the door is tied into cabinets, flooring, and surrounding trim work. The typical discovery goes like this: a homeowner pulls a kitchen permit for cabinets and countertops, the inspector flags the exterior door as out of square or energy-code deficient, and the door has to be addressed before the kitchen passes. That’s where we come in.
Here’s the straight answer up front: if your Therma-Tru door is part of a bigger kitchen job, the door itself usually accounts for $2,500 – $6,500 installed, and we carry factory-spec replacement sweeps, thresholds, weatherstripping, and hinge kits on our Houston trucks. If the door slab itself has failed, we order the Therma-Tru replacement to match the existing frame and panel profile, then replace it in one day once it lands. Curtis Lane reads every job the same way: straight scope, straight number, that’s the whole conversation.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru builds fiberglass and steel entry doors, patio door systems, and door frames. In Houston kitchens, we mostly work with three lines: the Classic-Craft fiberglass series (wood-grain looks, most common on remodeled homes), the Smooth-Star series (clean painted finish, popular on newer construction), and the Fiber-Classic series (the budget fiberglass line, often spec’d by builders in Sugar Land, Pearland, and Cypress). Each line runs different frame profiles and threshold heights, which matters when a kitchen remodel drops new flooring and the old door no longer clears it.
The compatibility gotcha most Houston homeowners miss: Therma-Tru doors above 36 inches wide or with sidelites use a different jamb depth than standard single doors. Measure your rough opening before ordering anything, and photograph the certification label on the hinge edge of the door if it’s still legible. Without that label, we can still identify the slab by panel profile, but it costs everyone a day. For most kitchens, OEM Therma-Tru is the right call. The fiberglass skins are molded at a specific density and bonded to the frame, and a generic fiberglass slab won’t seat correctly in a Therma-Tru jamb. We’ll say it plainly: we’re an independent remodeling contractor, not affiliated with Therma-Tru, and we spec OEM because the fit is correct the first time.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Door Is Failing
Most kitchen doors don’t fail suddenly. They lose their seal slowly, and the kitchen pays for it in comfort and energy cost. Here’s what we see on service calls across Houston:
- The door drags across the new floor. New tile or hardwood raises the finished floor height, and the door bottom now catches. The threshold needs to be reset or replaced, not the door. We routinely see this after DIY flooring jobs in Katy and Spring.
- Daylight at the bottom corner. The sweep has compressed or torn, and Houston humidity has warped the threshold slightly. You’re losing conditioned air into the garage or backyard, and that AC bill in August tells the story.
- The latch side rubs or won’t catch cleanly. Foundation movement, common in Houston’s clay soil, shifts the jamb. The fix is re-shimming and re-hanging the slab in the existing frame, not buying a new door.
- Condensation between the glass panes on a door with a glass insert. The insulated glass unit has lost its seal. That glass can be replaced independently of the slab, which saves real money over a full door replacement.
- The frame is soft at the bottom corner. Rain splash from a Houston downpour has wicked into unsealed wood or an old threshold. If the jamb is rotting, the door and frame both come out, and we reframe the opening before the new unit goes in.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In the Houston market, here’s what we quote, in writing, before any work starts:
- Full kitchen remodel with Therma-Tru door integration: $14,000 – $45,000 (scope-dependent: cabinet grade, countertop material, layout changes, structural work)
- Therma-Tru door replacement (slab only, existing frame): $2,500 – $4,800
- Therma-Tru door replacement (full unit including frame and threshold): $3,800 – $6,500
- Threshold, sweep, and weatherstripping replacement: $450 – $900
- Reframe rough opening + new door unit: $5,000 – $7,500 (includes structural work, flashing, interior trim)
The price depends on three things: whether the frame survives, what size door you have, and whether the kitchen scope includes structural changes around the opening. Every quote is a written, line-item price before tools come out. No change orders at the door. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installed door, the frame, the threshold, and the finish work for a full year in writing. If it doesn’t hold, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s The Garrison Standard, and it’s not negotiable.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check the sweep, the threshold screws, and the hinge tightness. If the door is dragging and you see adjustable threshold screws, snugging them down is a homeowner-level fix. What we don’t recommend is pulling a Therma-Tru slab off its hinges without a second set of hands. These door slabs are heavy, and a dropped slab cracks tile, gouges hardwood, and can hurt whoever’s underneath it. Same rule applies to any work involving the structural frame. If the jamb is soft, if the door won’t square up after hinge adjustment, or if the rough opening needs reframing, that’s a job for a crew that carries the right shims, flashing, and sealants on the truck. Call (940) 289-7658 and we’ll get eyes on it. A site visit and a written estimate cost you nothing.
FAQs

A properly installed Therma-Tru fiberglass door lasts 25 – 30 years in Houston’s climate, but the threshold, sweep, and weatherstripping typically need attention every 5 – 7 years because of heat, humidity, and rain splash. Steel doors last 15 – 20 years here before surface rust becomes a recurring problem.
Yes, if the slab is sound and the problem is the threshold, hinges, weatherstripping, or a failed glass insert. Repair usually runs $450 – $900. If the frame is rotted or the slab has cracked, replacement is cheaper than trying to patch fiberglass that has lost its structural integrity. Call (940) 289-7658 for a written assessment.
A slab swap in an existing frame takes one day on site. A full unit replacement with reframing takes two days, including interior trim and exterior sealing. We order the replacement unit before we schedule the tear-out, so we’re never leaving an open wall in a Houston kitchen.
Yes. Our Houston crews carry Therma-Tru-compatible sweeps, thresholds, hinge kits, and weatherstripping on the truck. Slabs and full units are ordered per job to match the exact panel profile and jamb depth. We also stock and install KraftMaid and Wellborn cabinetry, plus Cambria and Silestone surfaces, for the rest of the kitchen scope.
